A Very Good man of the Land
Australian Environment Foundation
Max Rheese
Max has spent almost forty years bushwalking, skiing and hunting in the Victorian Alps. There are not many areas in the high country of Victoria with which he is not familiar.
A fondness for mountain country, tall forest and remote places has fostered a desire to see such places managed so that future generations will experience and have access to the natural beauty of the Australian bush.
An enthusiasm for the conservation movement resulted in membership of the Australian Conservation Foundation for a number of years in the 1970’s until conservation became confused with preservation.
Awareness that the present generation were custodians of the environment for future generations and the need for pragmatic use of resources for people and the environment to prosper attracted Max to the values of the AEF.
Max has spent most of his working life in the horticultural industry, including six years on the board of Australia’s largest horticultural trading co-operative, with two years as chairman.
Max is also secretary of the Rivers & Red Gum Environment Alliance, a coalition of 25 organisations advocating for changes to land management in the red gum forests along the Murray River.
Following attendance at the Eureka Forum in December 2004, which was the origin of the AEF, Max joined and started assisting on a volunteer basis soon after. The AEF board appointed Max as its first Executive Director at the Inaugural Conference and AGM in September 2006.
Max lives in country Victoria and is married with five children, who all share his interest in the natural world.
